Pastor David Kasule’s "History of the New Life Kids Club"

"When I started the New Life Centre Church in April 2001 in Nakazzi… my vision was focused on spiritual perspective. Then my attention went on AIDS orphans because I found out that half of the homes had lost either one or both parents, when I first visited the surrounding villages while doing house to house visits. There was a poor old widow with 25 grandchildren, her own children all AIDS victims, and I cried tears! I was moved to try to do something. Well, I did not have faith to start an orphanage. But I thought of how to contribute to these hopeless children ... I wonder about the suffering of the 'African child'."

"I began by taking 2 orphans, Kizito and Mubiru, to a day school, from their desperate homes… I found more orphans staying on in their desperate homes and others living with their extended families. So I got the idea of making a kind of rehabilitation centre. The purpose was to uplift and encourage these children… I decided to take more children to school to brighten their education."

"I sent a word around to register these children. I began with 80 orphans but because of the need, the numbers went up to 200, 300, 500 children. I will give one example of why the number kept going up. A father who had lost his wife came to me. He was a sad looking man in his late or last AIDS stage. Frankly he told me that he was about to die and he asked me, 'How are my children going to be after I die'?"

"... Although Uganda has been so badly hit by AIDS, I’m grateful to the government for it’s efforts in fighting AIDS. The rate has been reduced from 30% to 6%. However we still have 1 million orphans (as of 2007, this is well over 2 million) left behind because of AIDS. My honor goes to our president for his efforts to fight AIDS."
